Introduction to Management

Two day course

Who is it for?

An essential course for anyone new to, or with up to two years' experience of managing other people.

Course overview:

So many people get promoted into a managerial role with no support or clear guidelines on how to manage others and how to do it well. This two day course focuses on the essential skills for any manager, is designed to build both confidence and competence in the role, and ultimately will impact on the productivity of all your staff. The session will be tailored specifically to your organisation but would typically cover:

  • What people management is really about, what  the very best managers actually do and how  they do it?
  • Motivation: Being motivated to get things done is as key to success as know what those things are. We look at what motivates people, and how you can consistently motivate your team to achieve their best using different motivational techniques.
  • Situational management skills: How to use and adapt your natural communication style to the individuals and the circumstances in which you are communicating in order to get the outcomes you seek
  • Performance management: How to set clear and attainable goals and get buy-in to achieve them and how to monitor and support at a level that works for you and the people in your team
  • Effective Delegation: What, why and how to delegate in a way that ensures that the tasks delegated are completed to the right standard within the right timeframe
  • Coaching Techniques: Why coaching works and how to coach effectively
  • Time Management: The biggest challenge to being the best manager you can be is finding the time to be a manager as well as conduct your day job! To do so is essential however and we look at how to make time to people manage and how to manage your time, your diary and your workload so you get it all done!
  • Assertiveness as a Manager: Your ability to communicate assertively as a manager is key to your success and the really good news is that assertiveness is a skill that we can all develop. We analyze what assertiveness is, and how to be assertive at all time,  even when under pressure.
  • Giving feedback and handling difficult situations: Without doubt , the ability to handle those tougher moments and give effective feedback is the toughest and yet probably most important skill for any manager  to develop. We work through a 5 point structure on how, when and where  to have the conversation, how to handle emotions, and ultimately how to turn a person around from negative behavior or underperformance to achieving everything they are capable of.

Our style:

At Performance for Business, we believe people learn by doing far more than by listening and that there should be as much emphasis on confidence in applying skills learnt back in the workplace as knowing the right techniques. Our courses are therefore interactive, challenging, fun and with the focus on skills practice as much as discussion.
